Nations and Identities (Fall 2008)

November 1, 2008

The student group arrived in Mexico well, exhausted but happy, late last night. After a very good night of well-deserved rest, the students are full of energy and ready to participate in the celebrations of El día de los Muertos.

September 23, 2008

All students and faculty arrived safely in India, a very different world from the places they left behind in Canada. Classes have begun, and students are trying to fathom the 5,000 years of Indian history among other topics. The group has begun to venture out into the neighborhoods and markets and have described India thus far as complex, busy, noisy, beautiful, heartbreaking, inspiring, ancient....and the list goes on.

August 25, 2008

All students arrived safely in Montreal and are now staying at a beautiful retreat location about forty minutes outside of Montreal. The group has begun introductions and program orientation and is looking forward to the weeks and months ahead!

Health and Community (Spring 2008)

April 10, 2008

Greetings from Zwelethemba!
The IHP Health and Community group is currently sheltered by a dozen or so loving families in an all-black township surrounded by breathtaking mesas, clear blue or starry skies, and lively music that emanates from every home at all hours. There is something joyful--almost festive--about the atmosphere here that has caught hold of our group. Our elevated mood may be due to the fresh air, the smiling, friendly people, or perhaps to the relative ease of communication here compared with China, as we certainly do like to talk. We are privileged to be hosted by a number of older women who were quite active in the struggle (against apartheid) and whose stories of the past and current attitudes inspire us. Walking to the home of a local sangoma (traditional healer) yesterday, we were soon joined by bands of children from all corners of the township, such that when we reached our destination the numbers in our procession had more than doubled. Other field visits have included a large-scale grape farm and winery, which were juxtaposed against a panel discussion with local farm workers about their working conditions and living situations in general. I don't think the pretty hostesses at the winery knew what they were getting themselves into when they began their tour with a bunch of IHPers, whose questions tended far more toward occupational health and safety issues than to pinotage and fermentation! We look forward to exploring issues around the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the coming weeks, and will report back later.
Love to all our families and friends,
IHP H&C

The group arrived safely in China and was immediately refueled after the long trip by Country Coordinator Hong Mautz and three Chinese university students, who fed them more dumplings than they knew what to do with. They are getting settled into the guest house where they will be staying for several days, and look forward to their formal welcome banquet of Peking Duck tonight, as well as a birthday celebration for one group member.

January 19, 2008

Greeted by a gorgeous view of the Alps, the Health and Community group arrived in Geneva safely and in good spirits despite the exhausting travel. They were met with mild weather for this time of year and have already become comfortable riding Geneva's well-integrated public transit system. The mood in the group is positive and amiable, full of high hopes for the semester ahead.

Emerging India and China (Summer 2008)
