Globalizing India and China: Comparative Politics and Economics
International Studies (four credits)
Syllabus

This course examines comparative political and economic policies and practices of late twentieth and early twenty-first century India and China. Students will study the period of intensive economic restructuring and expanding neoliberalism in India and China in order to explore how these countries are participating in processes of globalization. The course focuses on the role of international financial institutions and multinational capital, national development policies and strategies, and local configurations and appropriations of global capital. While discussing dominant trends, the course also offers a critical eye on contemporary political and economic challenges for the future toward understanding the re-emergence of India and China in the global arena.

Social and Cultural Transformations of India and China
Anthropology/Sociology (four credits)
Syllabus

This course explores social and cultural transformations and continuities through comparative study in India and China. After an introduction to socio-historical contexts, students will examine the relationships of social identities, social policies, and social problems in a rapidly globalizing world. The course is both theoretically challenging and squarely rooted in contemporary issues and prospects facing people in India and China. Students will learn methodological tools, including ethnographic research methods, for examining locally meaningful perspectives that resonate toward a broader understanding of culture and society in India and China.
